Job Description

Through leading innovations, we help farmers around the world meet the challenge of feeding a growing population and taking care of our planet. We are currently seeking a Lead, HSE Territory for our NA Seeds Development team supporting field operations. This position will be based out of our Slater, IA location.
The purpose of this role is to provide Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) support at their home site and lead additional HSE coordination at regional North America R&D sites. In conjunction with Syngenta corporate NA HSE requirements and global strategy, create and implement HSE and business strategy for the site to drive improvements in all key areas.

Accountabilities

  • Build a healthy, sustainable HSE culture through relationship building, communication, teamwork, celebrations and risk mitigation.
  • Participate as an operations team member with all site capabilities to ensure HSE programs and priorities are understood and managed.
  • Build detailed knowledge of site operations, risks and regulatory applicability. Participate in site operations meetings, plans and programs to ensure HSE risks are proactively understood and addressed.
  • Conduct HSE risk assessments and self-assessments and report results on a regular basis. Ensure controls are implemented to address risk and non-compliance.
  • As required, manage and collaborate with Syngenta HSE on all enforcement actions, notices of violation, informal settlement agreements, administrative orders and permit agreements.
  • Identify, develop and submit all required reports to local, state and federal governmental environmental agencies.
  • Ensure site conformance to published regional or group policies, programs, systems or procedures. Develop needed procedures for all safety, health and environmental programs and systems, adopting Regional or Group procedures where practical. Ensure procedural requirements are understood and followed by site personnel.
  • Manage site HSE training (regulatory, company requirements and risk based) program. Ensure a comprehensive training matrix and training plan are developed and maintained. Develop and deliver appropriate training content that is aligned with regulatory, company and risk-based requirements.
  • Advise leaders on the compliance status, costs and technical improvements needed to achieve compliance.
  • Create and disseminate HSE metrics on a monthly basis.
  • Lead or participate in appropriately detailed accident/incident investigations and the development of recommendations/actions to prevent a recurrence. Ensure site responds to and reports all workplace injuries and near misses in a timely fashion to Syngenta management as appropriate and governmental agencies when required.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 -years of relevant work experience required.
  • Course work or equivalent job experience in safety or environmental issues required.
  • Working knowledge of US-OSHA, US-EPA, and US-DOT regulations.
  • Experience in agriculture industry preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and influence/collaborate across different level of stakeholders and business functions.
  • Ability to problem solve and identify risk.
  • Accurate reporting and data analysis.
  • Drive safety culture in alignment with our ambition.
  • Ability to lead multi-functional teams.
  • Ability to successfully lead change efforts.
  • 25% travel required to other research locations by automobile or commercial aircraft.
  • Working conditions include exposure to weather conditions in the field. Exposure to pollen, allergens, chemical pesticides in field or greenhouse.
  • Individual must be authorized to work in the United States for Syngenta without work authorization sponsorship now or in the future.
